Learn How To Staying In Touch

Staying in touch with home or the office when you are travelling is a top priority these days. Businesses are expanding globally and travelling is becoming the norm of most businesses. This has created an emergence of broadband global area network (BGAN) to help provide a more reliable network connection for people to work and connect remotely. BGAN has helped many international businesses to increase their productivity and competitive edge despite the distance and absence of their workforce from the office. What do we know about this new communication technology? BGAN is a global internet access provided via satellite using portable telecommunication terminals. These portable terminals connect the laptop to the broadband internet in just about any remote locations. No requirements for satellite dishes, the portable terminals are lightweight and small about the size of a laptop. As such, they are very mobile and easy to be carried around. They can be used both indoor and outdoor and robust to withstand the harsh and extreme environments. There are also vehicular systems made up of an interior terminal and discreet tracking antenna mounted onto the roof of a vehicle to provide the connections while on the move. These terminals can support a router or switch device so that users can plug in multiple computers or even VOIP phones that could eventually be used as a mobile office. This network is provided my Inmarsat, the world leader in satellite communications. BGAN uses geostationary satellites to provide almost global coverage. The geostationary location of their satellites means their services will not be easily affected by connectivity outages or any natural or man-made catastrophes. Inmarsat currently operates from their existing 11 satellites to offer seamless mobile speech and data communication all over the world. BGAN service also enables TV broadcasting of all the real-time breaking news from the most distant and remote locations live into the homes of audiences worldwide. In recent months, some news correspondents have used this system to provide live coverage of the political unrest and natural disasters in several parts of the world.BGAN is aimed at providing cost-effective connectivity in remote locations where cellular and wireless data networks may not be available. It works almost anywhere except for regions surrounding the north and south poles. BGAN portable terminals have the capacity to support multiple users with support for data, voice, Bluetooth, Ethernet and the WIFI with a connection speed of 500 kbps. It is either powered by electricity, batteries or even generators. BGAN terminals come with omnidirectional antennas that give it the convenience to set up without much complex maintenance. It can be deployed to function in both aeronautical and marine environments too.BGAN enhances the connectivity of email, internet and intranet access via a secure VPN connection to the speeds of up to 492 kbps over a shared channel while streaming data on demand at rates in excess of 384 kbps. Users can make phone calls at the same time while accessing data applications. They can also send and receive text messages via the laptop up to 160 characters.

What Are The Best Business Applications For MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching)?

Given a scenario that you are developing the network architecture for a business (single or multi-site)….what would be the best application(s) where you would choose MPLS as the (or part of the) solution? This may not be as simple as it sounds…..thus the frustration faced by many responsible for a company network infrastructure solution.First, I recommend reading “MPLS Enabled Applications: Emerging Developments and New Technologies”. A simple Google search will find the best source to obtain a copy. For additional resources check out one of these books:MPLS and VPN Architectures, Volume I & Volume IIby Jim Guichard; Ivan Pepelnjak; Jeff ApcarDefinitive MPLS Network Designsby Jim Guichard; François Le Faucheur; Jean-Philippe VasseurTraffic Engineering with MPLSby Eric CCIE #4122 Osborne; Ajay CCIE #2970 SimhaInternet Routing Architectures, Second Editionby Sam Halabi; Danny McPhersonGenerally, MPLS is often thought of when considering replacing an existing frame relay network. MPLS is best at supporting the QoS needed for supporting integrated VoIP and data. Plus, MPLS is significantly easier for to engineer and roll out than say a new frame relay cloud.A good scenario would be an enterprise WAN with multiple service delivery needs, teleconferencing, VoIP, video, and data. Each of these services has different data delivery requirements. VoD needs bandwidth but after the initial push it is not time sensitive, data is not in any reasonable sense time sensitive, VoIP and video conferencing are both extremely time sensitive applications. In this situation MPLS is an excellent choice as transport. Not only is it fast, not requiring deep packet inspection beyond the ingress point to prioritize traffic, it also allows for multiple levels of service which puts you in a position to future proof your network to some extent.MPLS is also referred to as tag switching. The way that it works is at the network ingress point each packet is ‘tagged’, or a header put on the packet, which gives it a network identifier and a service level if service levels have been implemented. When switching within the network each router needs only inspect the tag to prioritize and forward the packet. In addition, network service providers are moving to MPLS because of its ease of implementation and the ability to transparently provision multiple customers on the same network, as opposed to frame relay which requires a separate network for each customer, and keep those customers perfectly digitally segregated. So, it’s a case of faster, cheaper, better for the service provider.QoS for VOIP and video is the big thing. MPLS gets used a fair bit for bandwidth guarantees and limits for things like Disaster Recovery (DR). A good example is when a business has two offices in different geographical areas, and wants to use a data-syncing solution (SAN replication, for example) between them for disaster recovery. But they have limited bandwidth, and don’t want the DR traffic to swamp the normal or VOIP traffic. Being able to label your traffic and set guarantees (for both minimum and maximum bandwidth) is pretty powerful. This also offers guarantees for in-order packet delivery (very important for VOIP/voice).For a single-site business, I would probably not deploy MPLS unless there was a serious amount of bandwidth in use, or if the campus was significantly large enough to justify using label switching for speed / QoS considerations. Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer for this scenario. For a multi-site, geographically diverse business, I would strongly consider MPLS as part of the solution, particularly if I am using a service provider such as Sprint, Level 3, BT, or any others to provide the meat of the network. This arrangement allows me to leverage the availability, redundancy, and scalability of their network to take the shortest path between sites. Most companies moving to MPLS were previously operating their private-line networks with either direct connections between offices, or utilizing frame-relay connections. A hub-and-spoke architecture is only efficient if all the data flows to/from the central location. However, most frame networks are meshed together, to facilitate office-to-office networking without overwhelming the hub site. It’s very easy for a large number of sites to turn into complex and unwieldy collections of frame circuits and PVCs. If the company’s IGP is not set up properly, traffic patterns can become stable at best, and down right chaotic at worst.Using MPLS with a provider eliminates the need to worry about any of the meshing that would have been handled by multiple private lines or frame-relay networks. Usually, routing is exchanged with a provider via BGP, or in the case of smaller networks, statically routed. An excellent application of MPLS seen in practice is that with a BGP-connected network, it is possible to set up a disaster recovery scenario at any other site connected to the network by a simple matter of moving the routing announcement for the primary location’s IP block to the DR location. It’s possible to do this on frame relay as well, but it can get complicated if the network is not configured properly. For application-specific items, MPLS can handle any variety of traffic classifications, which make it an ideal candidate for multi-site voice traffic to go along with your data. The downside of MPLS is that you’re at the mercy of your provider if there’s a configuration mistake or if their redundant network doesn’t redirect around an outage properly. Additionally, routing can become complex if there is a private network on the back end connecting two or more sites that also share an MPLS connection. As an overview of MPLS…….The Pros:* Site to Site Routing* Enhanced Carrier Aware QoS* Reduced Deployment Complexities* Enhancing High Availability* Quickened Disaster Recovery ReadinessThe Cons:* Initial Architectural Design Cycles* Reduced Visibility of Transport Network* Enhanced Security ConcernsIn summary MPLS is really just one alternative for the WAN communication backbone. The advantages are clear over a Frame Relay network…..as are the pitfalls. Whether you choose MPLS as all or part of your network infrastructure solution must takes those into account.

NASA’s Mission? Well, That’s an Easy One, Right?

Okay, okay. Well – most of us in the space business thought that NASA’s mission was well understood, at least within NASA. Most of us actually thought that we did a lousy job of communicating to the taxpayers across the country what the mission is and why it is important. As it turns out, congress understands NASA’s mission and the taxpayer understand the mission, but it is NASA that does not understand its mission.Today’s released interview with NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden on Al Jazeera’s confusing. Last week, MSFC endured a loss in workforce that is expected to be continued in the fall. The leadership, both NASA and contractor, at MSFC have performed admirably. They had difficult choices to make, but made them wisely by attempting to save as many jobs and skills as possible. Why? Because they don’t know which jobs or skills they will need for the future since the future is very uncertain. This week, the leadership teams at many centers were simply trying to forge ahead and determine the most valuable work to do with the remaining budgets and workforce. This week, many had hoped that this pain was behind us and the debate and discussions could move to the next phase – working on a compromise between congress and the white house. Instead, NASA will endure another dark week ahead because NASA is once again in the spotlight. What’s worse is that NASA is in the spotlight not because it is debating the path forward and forging compromises, but because its leadership and the President seem to misunderstand NASA’s very charter. So, what are we to make of this interview? What are we to make of the reaction? My analysis has run the gamut. It is possible that this was a mis-speak of what was communicated from Obama to Bolden. If it was, then whose idea is it to put Charlie out there on the public circuit to make this kind of gaff? Have they learned nothing from VP Joe? It is also possible that this was exactly what was communicated between Obama and Bolden. Even if it were the mission, whose idea was it to say it in the open on Al Jazeera? Clearly, the reaction from the right in our country could have been foreseen. Can it be possible to return to a fruitful debate on the future missions of NASA and its organization? Moreover, in the wake of last week, and in the heat of the war over Constellation and Human Space Flight, it could also be possible that Bolden is being a good marine. Every good General knows that sometimes the direct orders of the commanding officer are not in line with the good of the effort, the organization nor the troops. Every good General knows that sometimes the leader must sacrifice himself for the greater good. Could it also be possible that General Bolden has come to a point where he realized that his commanding officer’s orders will have a destructive effect on NASA?There is one thing for certain. There are very few within NASA or on the outside of NASA who know what is going on. What is also clear is that the inexperience of the executive branch is showing. NASA was not a major problem, but it has become one. It is not a problem to change direction. Many CEO’s have done so in the private sector. NASA does it routinely. But there is a science to change management. First, the leadership of any organization must decide if change is needed. Then, it must discuss, debate and decide what the end state should look like. Then it must decide the timelines and methods used to enact the change. Then it must execute it. Along the way are debates and discussions and most importantly, there is leadership. Communication from the top down to all the troops is required – to explain the reason for change, the purpose of the new organization and the value in executing the change. This is how change is done honorably, with respect to the loyal employees who have performed so well in the past. It is rare that a corporation will choose to completely dismantle an organization because that is considered a complete loss and makes no use of the resources and capital it has invested. But this change, one many of us on the inside could have embraced (just as we embraced the shift from Shuttle to Constellation), has been done so poorly with little regard to the employees and in a hostile manner to the contractors, it is difficult to say how much of any of it can be salvaged.Speaking solely on my own, but with many colleagues within the space program who share my feelings on this, Constellation is lost. The battle now moves to saving American Human Space Flight. If our political leadership can simply begin discussing the next moves forward, we the valuable space workers can begin moving forward and we will perform in amazing fashion as we always do. It is difficult for us to do that when we don’t know which way forward is. I have dedicated my life, since I was 11, to American Human Space Flight. It makes no difference to me if it is commercial or government, so long as it is successful. In spite of what the president may think, it is not he who makes it successful, it is not government or companies who make it successful, it is NOT our cooperation with foreign countries (they need us not the other way around), rather it IS the American people, their sweat, their passion, their freedom, their dedication and their Inspiration that has always brought prosperity and success to our country and our industry. Most of our presidents have understood that.

A Glossary of Networking Terms – Part 1

Nearly every part of our lives these days will be affected, influenced and often facilitated by the use of computers and more to the point, networks of computers. Whether it be the wireless networks of PCs, games consoles and phones sharing internet connections in our homes or the vast business infrastructures that provide so many of the services we take for granted; even the internet itself. As with all areas of technology though, the world of networking is thick with jargon and so can appear very esoteric to those that don’t work within the field. This article therefore aims to summarise a few of the terms that people might stumble across in their everyday encounters with networks.PacketsData packets, sometimes simple referred to as packets in a computing context, are to some extent self explanatory in that they are pieces/units of digital data which are formatted into ‘packets’ in order for them to be transferred across networks. There are two elements to these packets, the information that is being transferred (sometimes called the payload) and the control data, which contains information to help it reach its destination. The control data can include details about the destination and source addresses, error checking, information about the size and type of packet (which protocols it follows) and information to help reconstruct bigger units of data where they fragmented into smaller packets. A helpful analogy is that of a letter which can contain all of the information it needs to reach its destination and be interpreted by the reader correctly, recorded before and after the content itself.LAN vs WANLAN is the abbreviation of Local Area Network; WAN is the abbreviation of Wide Area Network. LANs and WANs are to some extent defined in contrast to each other. In simple terms LANs are small networks which connect devices in one location. They are usually constructed using Ethernet cables (and their compatible technologies) and/or Wireless protocols to connect the localised devices, all behind one firewall. As a result of the proximity of devices and therefore the technologies that can be used to connect them, LANs are able to offer high speed data transfer rates between the interconnected devices. They are commonly deployed and utilised in single work locations such as offices but over the last decade or so have also become common in peoples homes to enable their computers and entertainment devices to talk to each other and share an internet connection. They are, by their nature, private networks (with communication possible between local devices behind a firewall) and usually have a single gateway to public networks such as the internet.WANs, on the other hand, are networks which span multiple locations to interconnect individual devices or separate local networks. The term can therefore be applied to the entire network they form (including LANs) or the just the connections made between the separate localised networks. WANs can employ a variety of technologies to this effect. They can take the form of private networks where dedicated leased lines or virtual private networks are used to securely connect disparate private LANs together, or they can simply form open communication networks which the public can use to share information. In the latter sense the internet can be considered to be a variation of a WAN. Private WANs are integral fro businesses working across multiple locations to ensure that each location can interact and communicate securely and to offer the economies of scale that arise from the centralisation of infrastructure such as the use of central servers for business hosting.
